Previously on this blog, we discussed various glove allergies that can manifest due to being allergic to the glove material used in the glove manufacturing process. To give a brief recap, allergic reactions or contact dermatitis (skin irritation) potential can be from latex or chemicals (usually rubber accelerants) added in the manufacturing process.

The potential risks of allergic reactions or contact dermatitis (skin irritation) mainly stem from the latex or chemicals (usually rubber accelerators) added during the manufacturing process. Latex contains a variety of protein molecules, which are foreign antigens to the human immune system. When the human body comes into contact with latex for the first time, the immune system recognizes these antigens and produces corresponding antibodies. Once exposed again, the combination of antigens and antibodies triggers a series of immune responses, leading to allergic symptoms on the skin such as redness, itching, and rashes. Chemicals like rubber accelerators, on the other hand, may damage the stratum corneum on the skin’s surface, weaken the skin’s barrier function, making the skin more susceptible to external stimuli and thus causing contact dermatitis.

Our company believes in reducing the reliance of hazardous substances in our manufacturing process. SW is actively seeking ways to reduce the use of volatile organic compounds deemed risky to the environment. Preventing chemical pollution and minimizing the amount of chemicals in our products is a top priority. Not only is it better for customers’ skin health, the overall benefits of reducing skin irritation in disposable gloves cycle back to workplace productivity. High quality, comfortable hand protection and better employee health go hand in hand with workplace productivity. Employees who can perform tasks efficiently and comfortably means they are more willing to use protective gear in the workplace. Previous statistics have shown that workplace accidents can happen due to employees taking risks by forgoing hand protection due to discomfort in donning personal protective gear. Less accidents then further leads to less downtime, as less employees are cycled out due to injury. Compliance in the working environment leads to less costs spent on being fined for not adhering to workplace safety regulations.
