As a previous ASK GIA blog discussed, ESG is important in today’s business landscape because it verifies the credibility and transparency of a company. It may also contribute to the future success of a company. The movement was an effort to create sustainable investments, for investors to maximize returns while creating long term social or environmental advantages. In fact, practicing ESG values increases the longevity of a business. Without the raw materials necessary, a business cannot continue its output of new products.
Not only this but not following ESG values may also contribute to businesses receiving fines due to not complying with local government legislation. As a consequence of a volatile supply chain, consumers lose access to the products that they need or would like to purchase. Therefore, protecting the environment and practicing ESG values is of interest to both business owners and consumers.
A sustainable and responsible supply chain integrates ethical and environmentally responsible practices into its business model. This can be shown through several methods, such as minimizing, repurposing, or recycling waste in the manufacturing process. These days, many businesses use recycled materials instead of virgin raw materials in their products or product catering. Another popular method is utilizing renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels for the energy requirement or supply mechanism. However, these methods must encompass end-to-end services. Sustainable practices should be included in not just sourcing of raw materials but towards transportation logistics and the cradle-to-grave of products. This includes the recycling or minimum impacting disposal of the product.
It’s important to provide transparency and maintain ethical standards in the supply chain. The United Nations Global Impact has created 10 criteria for measuring supply chain sustainability. “
