Our skin is the first and largest organ and form of protection for our body against the harsh outside environment – whether it be microbes, chemicals, or changing temperature conditions. When this first line of defense is weak and damaged, it can leave the body vulnerable. Skin covers all the functional, active and moving body parts, even hands.
Dry hands are a common issue in the workplace, especially in occupations requiring workers to wear gloves for extensive, lengthy periods. Frequent hand washing, exposure to general chemicals, or even predisposed health conditions may also contribute to having dry hands. Hands are vital for our function and survival and must be cared for well. Dry hands will lead to skin to cracking, infection, dermatitis, and eczema if left untreated. This can get extremely uncomfortable and irritable as dry skin comes with varying levels of roughness, itchiness, tight patches, and pain, depending on the severity.
Keeping the skin hydrated is the best way to maintain healthy skin and, in turn, healthy hands. Hydrated skin helps naturally protect it from irritants and germs and improves its elasticity and appearance. Since skin acts as a natural barrier to external elements, hydration can make it less likely to crack and break and more resistant to irritants and environmental stressors. A common moisturizing agent is aloe vera, a plant that has triangular, fleshy leaves with serrated edges. “Aloe…[makes] the skin more elastic and less wrinkled….It also has cohesive effects on the superficial flaking epidermal cells by sticking them together, which softens the skin….The amino acids also soften hardened skin cells and zinc acts as an astringent to tighten pores,” (Dermatol 2008).
The unique solution to dry hands and innovation in the glove industry was to manufacture gloves infused with aloe vera for workers predisposed to dry hands or have developed dry hands from working long hours in harsh environments. SW Sustainability Solutions Inc. was the first to manufacture disposable nitrile gloves with aloe vera lining, which is exhibited in our patented EnerGel technology.
SW Sustainability Solutions Inc.’s aloe vera-lined gloves are designed to produce the most effective moisturization for our customers’ hands. Delivered deep into the skin, EnerGel helps those predisposed to dry skin, contact dermatitis, or eczema by assisting the skin’s healing process, soothing the skin, and reducing inflammation and irritation flare-ups.
